Kitten - free knitting pattern

These cute kitties take only an hour or so to knit and use scraps of double knit (DK) yarn. You could knit the head or tail a different colour if you like, or, try strpies if you're feeling daring! These kitties are knitted in DK yarn on 3mm needles, you could use the same pattern with almost any yarn, you'll just get a bigger or smaller kitten depending on the yarn size

Making the head

  1. Cast on 14 stitches
  2. Knit each row (garter stitch) for 14 rows
  3. Knit together the first 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 4 rows
  4. Increase 1 stitch at the beginning of the next 4 rows
  5. Knit each row (garter stitch) for 14 rows
  6. Cast off all 14 stitches leaving a long tail of yarn to be used for sewing up

Making the body

  1. Cast on 24 stitches
  2. Knit each row (garter stitch) for 50 rows
  3. Cast off all 24 stitches leaving a long tail of yarn to be used for sewing up

Making the tail

  1. (turning the knitting mid-row creates a 'bump' which gives a bit of a curve)
  2. Cast on 16 stitches
  3. Knit 1 row
  4. Knit 10 turn knitting (you 'ignore' the last 4 stitches)
  5. Knit 10 back to end of row
  6. Knit 1 row (all 16 stitches)
  7. Repeat last 3 rows 3 times

Making up the kitten

  1. Look at the 'before' and 'after' pictures to get an idea on how monkey is sewed together.
  2. Pinch the body together as shown in the picture. Sew the seams of the front and back 'legs' together, leave a hole in the middle of the tummy to stuff the kitty, after stuffing, sew up the hole
  3. Fold the head in half at the neck and stitch up the sides leaving an opening at the top of the head, stuff the head then sew up the hole. Use the sewing end of the yarn to sticth the head to the front of the body (you can pass the needle and yarn right through the body to save joining new bits of sewing up yarn). A few sticthes under the 'chin' and a few at the back of the head helps keep the head upright.
  4. Fold the tail in half so it makes a narrow tube and sew the side seams together. Stitch the tail to kitty's backside
  5. Put a face on your kitty either with embroidery, stuck on felt or boggly eyes for a really mad look (you may need to put these on before sewing the head up if the eyes have washers on the back). Put a collar or ribbon and bell on kitty if you like.
